History of Cloyne Parish
The town of Cloyne was founded around the year 580 A.D. and owes it origins to St. Colman. Colman had been a bard (i.e. historian and poet) and had been attached to the court of the King of Cashel.
He was converted to Christianity in his late forties and given the Cloyne area by the King as a land-grant on which to build his monastery.
Following the building of the monastery a monastic school was established and the town grew quickly.
St. Colman died in Cloyne in 604 A.D. He is the Patron Saint of the Diocese of Cloyne and his feastday falls on the 24th November.St. Colman
