Sacraments

Celebrating the sacraments is at the centre of our parish life.

Our big moments in life are marked by the sacraments – Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist, Marriage, Holy Orders, Reconciliation and Anointing of the Sick. The sacrament of Baptism is the gateway towards all the other Christian sacraments.

Baptism

The sacrament of Baptism is the welcoming of your child into the Christian community. The responsibility of parents is to live and practice their faith, so in that way it is handed on to their children.  In having your child baptised you are promising to bring your child up in the Catholic Faith.

Baptisms take place in the four Parish Churches:

Cloyne – Saturdays 4 p.m.                                                                                                                     Other Churches – by arrangement

Application Forms to have your child baptised are available from the Parish Office.

First Holy Communion

First Holy Communions usually take place in the month of May.  The boys and girls receive this sacrament usually around nine years of age.  Each school in the parish has their own ceremony on a Saturday morning during the month.  Family members take part in a period of preparation with the wider community during the year leading up to the ceremony.  The primary schools which the children attend are in the areas listed below.

Marriage

Congratulations on your decision to marry.  Your decision to marry in Church is a public statement of your faith in Jesus Christ, and in celebrating the Sacrament you are inviting Jesus to be present at the heart of your new life together.

We recommend that you both meet with the priest who is to officiate at the ceremony well in advance of the wedding to discuss the requirements in conducting a marriage and to plan the ceremony together.

The procedures for a wedding include the completion of a Pre-Nuptial Enquiry Form (to be completed by the couple and priest in the parish of residence of the couple); 3 months notice must be given to the Parish and 3 months notice needs to be given to the State Registrar.

A leaflet is available from the Parish Office.

Couples from outside the parish are welcome to celebrate their marriage in any of the four churches of the parish.
